As a young boy, I found myself at the local store with 10 cents burning a hole in my pocket.

I examined the candy carefully, trying to figure out how much candy I could buy to maximize every penny. After composing a carefully crafted strategy, I approached the register – the dime in one hand and two pieces of penny candy in the other.

The clerk rang me up, and I returned to the candy aisle. After a few minutes, I approached the clerk again and bought two more candies.

On my third approach to the register, the clerk asked me, "Why don't you just buy the penny candy all at once?"

Confessing my strategy, I replied, "You were gonna charge me sales tax, and I wouldn't have enough for 10 pieces. I figured if I bought a few at a time, it wouldn't be enough to charge me sales tax."

Laughing, she rang up the rest of the candy and told me I was one smart little kid.
