The earliest lesson about the value of money happened to me when I was around 6 years old. My father and I were picking up and throwing away some papers by the trash cans in our backyard. While doing so, I found a penny on the ground and with little thought, I threw it into the trash with the rest of the papers. My father immediately questioned me on my actions, and my response was “it’s just a penny.” Like a movie script, later that same day my brother and I accompanied my father to a parts store as we did a lot of weekends back in those days. As we approached the counter, I noticed a candy machine that sold gumballs for a penny. As I turned to my father to ask for a penny to purchase a gumball, before the words even exited from out of my mouth, my father says to me “I bet you wish you had that penny now." That was a hard lesson to learn for a 6-year-old child, especially as my brother sat next to me on the ride home happily chomping on his penny gumball.
