The earliest lesson about the value of money happened to me when I was around 6 years old. My father and I were picking up and throwing away papers by the trash cans in our backyard. While doing so, I found a penny on the ground and with little thought, threw it into the trash with the rest of the papers. My father immediately questioned me on the action, and my response was “it’s just a penny.” Like in a movie script, later on that same day my brother and I accompanied my father to a parts store as we did a lot of weekends in those days. As we approached the counter, I noticed a candy machine that sold gumballs for a penny. As I turned to my father to ask for a penny so I could purchase a gumball, before the words even exited from my mouth, my father said to me, “I bet you wish you had that penny.” That was a hard lesson to learn for a 6 year old, especially as my brother sat next to me on the ride home happily chomping on his penny gumball.

I am a planner by nature, and the experiences of my blue-collar upbringing fueled my lifelong interest in budgeting, saving and investing for the future. That desire ultimately led me to my career with Edward Jones. Today I am lucky enough to help hundreds of families with the investment goals most important to them and their families.

My wife, Jodi, and I have two sons, Kobe and Caden. Both of our sons are currently attending college, and Caden has followed in his mother's footsteps as an Army reservist. We enjoy spending time together – traveling, camping, hunting, golfing and attending sporting events.
