    Economist and business leader Byron Auguste is co-founder and CEO of Opportuni-ty@Work, leading a national movement to ‘tear the paper ceiling’, helping both private and public sector employers to recognize, invest in, and fully activate the skills of 70+ million U.S. workers Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs) such as military service, community college, workforce training, apprenticeships, and on-the-job learning rather than a bachelor’s degree.

    Byron currently advises the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Gina M. Raimondo, on national competitiveness in semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, energy, infra-structure, and talent as an appointed Member of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NACIE). Byron is a Member of the Council of Foreign Relations, American Economic Association, National Economic Association, and the Pacific Council on International Policy, and serves on the non-profit boards of Hope Street Group and Merit America.

    Prior to Opportunity@Work, Byron served as a White House economic policy advisor to President Barack Obama and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council (NEC) from 2013 to 2015. Before his White House service, Byron served as a Succes-sor Trustee of the Yale Corporation, the university’s 17-member governing board, and a member of its Finance, Governance, and Investment Committees. Additionally, Byron advised Fortune 500 companies and global institutions at McKinsey & Co. as a senior partner. In 2020, Byron was selected as a Senior Research Fellow for Autodesk, the world’s largest design automation software company.

    Named one of Forbes’ Future of Work 50 leaders “rethinking the world of work,” Byron has been tapped by Bloomberg, CNN Business, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, NBC’s Today Show, NPR, and PBS NewsHour for his expertise. Byron is the author of The Economics of International Payments Unions and Clearing Houses.

    Byron earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Yale College in New Haven, Conn., graduating summa cum laude. He also earned master of philosophy and doctor of philosophy degrees in economics from St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford, in Oxford, ENG, where he was a Marshall Scholar. He is fluent in French and Spanish, and proficient in Portuguese.
    Byron was raised in Detroit, Mich., and Phoenix, Ariz., and currently resides in Washington, D.C., with his wife. He has three grown children and a dispersed but close-knit extended family.
