Since my daughter Leah’s 1st day of kindergarten, we always had the same tradition: get ice cream from Cold Stone, find a spot on the top of Signal Hill Park and just talk about whatever is on her mind.

A few years ago, on our special day, I’m chomping away at my strawberry brownie ice cream on the top of the hill and Leah asked me something I will never forget. “Dad I know you miss Grandma, and I have a hard time remembering her. What are some of the things she taught you that you remember the most?

I sat there in awe that my then 10-year-old little girl was so observant of how much I missed my mom since her passing. After a few moments of searching myself, I answered Leah in a way to connect with her with my mom as if she were still her.

-Grandma spent her whole life dedicated to her spiritual growth and caring for others. She even married Grandpa, who also dedicated his life serving the lives of others.
-She was drawn to help those in need and enhancing the lives of those around her.
-Grandma was excellent at showing empathy. She built relationships by learning about others, hearing their stories and helping them reach their place of happiness in life.
-Grandma always told me to be good at making tough decisions for yourself and others, and follow through until you accomplish the goal.

Leah stops me and asked in her 10-year-old voice, “Dad, what’s empathy?”
“It’s the effort we make to understand someone else’s situation. It makes it easier to use your gifts to make their life a little better. That’s why Dad became an advisor.”

My focus is helping business owners, engineers, medical professionals, executives and families to achieve what is most important to them.
