Dr. David E. Bond
Received his university education in the United States at Dartmouth College and Yale University, where he earned his doctorate in economics. He has taught at the universities of Western Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, and has co-authored books on the impact of U.S.-Canada free trade upon the Canadian furniture industry, as well as a textbook on money and banking. His most recent book, Future Perfect: Retirement Strategies for Productive People, clearly establishes that retirement is no longer an end, but a beginning.
Bond entered the public service of Canada in 1972 and served in the Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, Statistics Canada, the Ministry of State for Economic Development, and Regional Economic Development. He was an assistant deputy minister and later a deputy secretary. Bond was subsequently appointed president of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters.
In 1989, Bond was named vice president of public affairs and marketing for the Hong Kong Bank of Canada and later became the bank’s chief economist, holding that position until he retired in 1998. He is currently an adjunct professor of finance in the Faculty of Commerce of the University of British Columbia.
Bond was the founding president of the Friends of the Canadian Museum of Civilization and president of the Vancouver Maritime Museum. He was a board member of Langara Community College in Vancouver and served as a member and subsequently chairman of the Board of Simon Fraser University. He is a past member of the boards of the Canada West Foundation and the Canadian Institute for International Affairs. In 1996 and 1997, Bond served on the advisory committee for the Revision of the Canadian Payments System. In addition, he is a past president of the Association of Professional Economists of British Columbia.
